Parfums de Marly Haltane is one of those fragrances that sounds much more challenging on paper than it actually smells on skin.
Oud, leather, saffron and patchouli can easily sound like a heavy combination. Haltane, however, turns them into something surprisingly approachable. Dark woods are balanced by aromatic freshness and a touch of praline sweetness that completely changes the character of the fragrance.
Haltane was released in 2021, originally as a Harrods exclusive, and was created by perfumer Jordi Fernández. The composition features bergamot and pink pepper, followed by saffron, praline, lavender and clary sage, with oud, patchouli, vetiver and leather forming the base.
What does Parfums de Marly Haltane smell like?
The first surprise comes almost immediately. Haltane doesn’t hit you with a wall of dark oud.
Bergamot brings some brightness to the opening, while lavender and clary sage give it a clean, aromatic quality. There is still a warm spiciness underneath, giving you a hint of where the fragrance is heading.
For me, the real character of Haltane begins to appear a little later.
Saffron introduces a dry, elegant spiciness while the woods gradually become darker. At the same time, praline starts to emerge in the background. It might be the most interesting detail in the entire fragrance.
The praline doesn’t turn Haltane into a true gourmand. Instead, it softens the oud and leather with a subtle nutty, caramel-like sweetness. It gives an otherwise dark composition a smoother and more inviting character.
And then the oud really starts to show.
An oud that doesn’t require getting used to
Oud can be challenging. In some fragrances it becomes animalic, intensely smoky or simply too aggressive for someone who isn’t already familiar with it.
Haltane takes a very different approach.
Here, the oud feels polished and refined. It is dark, woody and warm without becoming particularly dirty or animalic. Leather, patchouli and vetiver give the base dryness and structure, while the sweetness of praline continues to soften the composition.
This is one of the reasons Haltane can be an interesting introduction to oud fragrances. You still get that dark, luxurious woody character, but without immediately entering the more challenging side of oud.
Who is Haltane for?
Parfums de Marly markets Haltane as a men’s fragrance, and it certainly has a traditionally masculine character. It feels structured, dark and confident.
That doesn’t mean it needs to be limited by gender. If you enjoy oud, leather, saffron and aromatic woods, Haltane is worth trying regardless of who it is marketed towards.
For me, Haltane feels most natural during autumn and winter. It works particularly well for dinners, evenings out and occasions where you want something a little more dressed up.
On a hot summer afternoon, I would probably reach for something fresher. When the temperature drops, Haltane starts to make much more sense.
The good and bad sides of Haltane
The good: Haltane balances oud and sweetness exceptionally well. It has plenty of character and strength without becoming unnecessarily difficult to wear. The praline gives it a recognisable personality, while the oud, leather and saffron keep the fragrance rich and sophisticated. It also has the kind of presence that works particularly well in colder weather.
The bad: Haltane isn’t necessarily the most versatile fragrance if you prefer light and discreet scents. Oud, saffron, leather and sweetness create a rich composition that can feel heavy in warm weather. The praline note may also divide opinions. If you are looking for an extremely dry or traditional oud fragrance, Haltane might feel sweeter than expected.
Who created Parfums de Marly Haltane?
Haltane was created by perfumer Jordi Fernández and released in 2021.
The fragrance was originally introduced as a Harrods exclusive before becoming more widely available. The idea behind Haltane combines traditional noble woods and leather with a more contemporary sweetness.
That contrast describes the fragrance surprisingly well.
There is something classic about the oud, leather and aromatic character, but the praline pulls Haltane firmly into the modern world. It makes the fragrance smoother, sweeter and considerably easier to approach.
Is Parfums de Marly Haltane worth trying?
If oud interests you but very smoky or animalic oud fragrances feel like too much, Haltane is a particularly interesting place to start.
It is also much more than just another dark woody fragrance. The contrast between its aromatic opening, saffron, praline and oud gives Haltane its personality. The first spray and the fragrance sitting on your skin an hour later can almost feel like two different sides of the same scent.
That is exactly why Haltane is worth experiencing on skin rather than judging it from a list of notes.
Parfums de Marly Haltane is available at WHIFF in 5 ml and 10 ml sizes, giving you the chance to properly experience the fragrance before considering a full bottle.
